Running for calm

POSTED:

It's so important that we all take a break from the screen-fuelled, fast-paced rhythm of our modern lives. Running has always provided us with an escape and many still enjoy getting out for that 20 minutes jog or walk for no reason but for the joy of moving.

The beauty of running is that it is so accessible and allows us freedom to be alone within our own headspace without distraction. We do not get much opportunity in the modern world to reach that point of no thought and a feeling of calmness and quietness in our minds.

When we think of calmness, often people will point to the sound of running water, or their proximity to it. Running can have the same effect if you put yourself in the right kind of environment.

Here’s our top 5 tips for incorporating some calm into your walk or run;

  • Schedule your walk or run so not feeling rushed or under pressure to squeeze in your 30 minutes of exercise.
  • Plan where you’re going to walk or run. Proximity to water has a calming influence so why not find out if there is a local Greenway or Blueway close by.
  • Leave the headphones at home and enjoy the sounds of your surroundings.
  • Don’t set the watch and just embrace the joy of movement.
  • Focus on your breathing. Try to do this – keep your breathing deep and consistent – throughout your entire run.
  • Run when you can, walk when you need to.
