Trails to Try in 2022 

As restrictions ease and days get longer, why not venture out with a friend or the family, on one of the Waterways Ireland trails to see some of the beautiful landscapes on our doorstep. 

Over 2022, Waterways Ireland will be recommending trails and locations for Athletics Ireland members to see, whether its for a change of scenery for your training sessions or to get out with the family and take in some of Irelands most breath taking sites. 

These locations are free to visit by the public, always check with Waterways Ireland for more information on Greenways, Blueway's and a list of all the other fun things you can do in our unexplored outdoors. 

Shannon Blueway 

This 5km trail starts on Ireland’s first floating boardwalk at Acres Lake in Drumshanbo, Co. Leitrim. This route is on the first section of the Shannon Blueway. 

This trail follows the magnificent River Shannon as it winds its way to Carrick on Shannon. For more details see HERE

Ballyconnell Loop 

This trail gives you a glimpse into the leafy heart of Cavan, it takes in riverbank paths, woodland tracks and sandy roadways as it explores the Shannon-Erne Blueway.

Barrow Blueway

This trail begins at Spencer Bridge, co. Kildare and it’s a completed part of the in-development Barrow Blueway. 

Popular trips include starting at Spencer Bridge 53.21685, -6.99951 to Wilsons Bridge, a distance of 2.15km one way  or alternatively from Rathangan Town Bridge 53.21940, -6.99190 to Glenaree is 3.95km one way.

The Barrow Blueway will be a multi-use shared leisure route connecting Lowtown to Athy in County Kildare with 46km of off-road, flat, accessible, public space.
