CHAMPIONSHIP RECORDS FALL ON DAY 2 OF ALL IRELAND SCHOOLS

POSTED:

The 2024 edition of the 123.ie All-Ireland Schools Track and Field Championships came to a thrilling conclusion at a sun-drenched Tullamore Harriers Stadium this evening (June 1st).

The two-day athletics extravaganza saw over 1000 athletes from 300 schools produce a host of thrilling performances. Among the championship records to fall were the Intermediate Pole Vault (Michael Kent, Good Counsel College New Ross, 4.55m CR), Intermediate Hammer (Thomas Williams, Colaiste Dun an Ri Kingscourt, 70.58 CR), and the Senior Discus (Cian Crampton Oaklands CC Edenderry, 54.29 CR).

The first track medal of the day went to Emily Bolton (Mount Sackville) in the Intermediate Girls 3,000m. Bolton ran to gold in her customary from-the-front style in a time of 10:17:65. The Mount Sackville athlete would return later in the day to claim gold in the 1500m in a time of 4.35:07.

Clodagh Gill (St Marys Ballina) and Anna Gardiner (Assumption GS) produced a titanic tussle in the stacked Senior Girls 3,000m, with Gill ultimately coming out on top in a winning time of 10:01.98.

Fatima Amusa (Bishopstown CS) claimed the Senior Girls 100m sprint title impressively, crossing in a time of 12:50. Sean Aigboboh  (The High School, Rathgar) did little to dampen his reputation, picking up gold in the Senior Boys 100m in 10.90.

Ratoath’s Katie Doherty (Ratoath College) secured another national title in the Intermediate 200m, stretching clear of the field over the final 50 meters to cross in 25:36. Dannan Long (FCJ Bunclody) claimed a stacked Senior Boys 200m in 21.65.

Veronica O’Neill (Thornhill College Derry) was the leading light over hurdles, picking up double gold in both the senior 400mH (1:01.94) and 100mH (14.52) respectively.

The 800m races produced several thrilling finished, no more so than the senior boy’s race which went the way of Oisin Lynch (St Brendans Killarney) in 1:53:34. There was a great battle between Saoirse Fitzgerald (Lucan CC) and Pia Langton (Loreto Kilkenny) in the senior girl’s race, with Fitzgerald stretching clear around the final bend to cross in 2:10:10.

Seán Doggett (Colaiste an Eachreidh) finalised his preparations for the upcoming European Championships in Rome to take the Senior Boys 400m in 48.10. The Senior Girls 400m went the way of Daisy Walker (St. Louis Monaghan) in 56.99.

The 1500m finals were a compelling watch. Freya Renton (Sacred Heart Westport) went it alone in the junior girl’s race, finishing in 4.27:95 which was just half a second outside Emer McKee’s 2023 championship record.

The senior boy’s race was billed as one of the races of the day and it proved to be just that with the hugely talent pair of Cormac Dixon (Holy Family Community School R'coole) and Sean Cronin (Colaiste Ghlór Na Mara) rounding the final bend side-by-side. It would be Dixon who find that little bit more on this occasion to cross in 4:02.43, followed by Cronin in 4:03.47.

The senior girl’s race was also one not to be missed and it didn’t disappoint with Nicole Dinan (St. Angelas Cork) chasing down Eimear McCarroll (Loreto Omagh) in a winning time of 4:27.88.

The relays signed off another thrilling day of track action with the highlight coming in the Intermediate 4x100m Boy’s where Blackrock College set a new championship record of 43.10CR.

Field finals

The Senior Girls High Jump was a quality affair with Ava Rochford (Rice College Ennis) posting the leading clearance of 1.75m to take gold ahead of Siún Quinn (St. Colmcilles CS) 1.70.

Conor Penny put in another excellent showing in the Intermediate Boys High Jump for Calasanctius College Oranmore, posting a best leap of 1.95 to take the gold.

Kara Morrisey (Presentation Wexford) backed up her national senior indoor pole vault title to take the intermediate title on count back today with a best vault of 3.20. Morrisey was pushed all the way by Meabh Corkery (St. Marys Midleton) who also cleared 3.20.

The Intermediate Boys Pole Vault delivered one of the performances of the day with Michael Kent (Good Counsel College New Ross) breaking the championships record, which had stood since 1993, with an impressive 4.55m clearance. Kent would also go on to take gold in the long jump (6.94) to round out a superb day for the New Ross athlete. Alex Neff (Gaelcholaiste Carraig Ui Leighin) walked away with the senior pole vault title with a best clearance of 4.25m.

Rising hammer throw star, Thomas Williams (Colaiste Dun an Ri Kingscourt), produced another massive performance in the Intermediate Boys Hammer. Williams smashed Paul Hogan's old CR of 67.84m, which had stood since 1981, with a huge 70.58 championship record.

Caoimhe Gallen (St Columbas Stranorlar) was hugely impressive in the Inter Girls Hammer, posting a best of 59.50 to claim gold.

Cian Crampton (Oaklands CC Edenderry) stole the show in the Senior Boys Discus, throwing his way to a new PB of 54.29 CR ahead of Corey Scanlan (St. Augustines College) 44.63, and Liam Shaw (Presentation College Athenry) 43.45.

Andrew Cooper (Kilkenny College) added to his national senior indoor title with a 15.06m shot to take the Senior Boys title.
