Tim O Donoghue from East Cork AC finishes the first in-person Cork City Marathon in two years in 2 hours 18 minutes and 37 seconds setting a new course record

Leevale AC’s Lizzie Lee was the first woman to cross the line in a time of 02.44.54.

Sunday, 5th June 2022 - Cork City Marathon closes out its first in-person event in three years with an incredible win from Tim O Donoghue from East Cork AC who completed the marathon in 02.18.37 setting a new course record. The women’s title was taken by local woman Lizzie Lee from Leevale AC who crossed the finish line at 02.44.54. Pawel Kosek and Alan Oshea were close runners-up in the men’s race with a time of 02.22.39 and 02.24.45 respectively. In the women’s race Sorcha Loughnane and Aoife O’Leary followed winner Lizzie home in 02.45.12 and 02.56.40 respectively Read the full list of winners and times here.

On Sunday, Cork city welcomed runners from 100 countries all over the world for one of the premier events in the marathon calendar with 12,000 runners in total taking to the streets. Previous winner and record-breaker Gary O’Hanlon participated in the 2022 race, finishing 4th in the men’s race with a time of 02.25.28. 

The Marathon’s Race Director, Adrienne Rodgers, commented:  

“We are delighted with the success of this year’s marathon. This event has been our most impressive by far, a testament to the city’s ability to bounce back from a particularly tough two years. The support from our volunteers, partners, and the Cork people for this event was incredible.”

The marathon began and finished on Patrick’s Street, winding its way around the city centre to showcase Cork’s many attractions. Blackrock Castle, the Lee estuary, and the old Passage railway line were among the highlights. This event was the first in-person marathon in almost three years. Last year’s virtual event saw over 4,000 people taking part from 70 different countries.
