DAY OF FINALS FOR IRISH IN ISRAEL

The final day of the U18 European Championships saw four Irish athletes taking to the stadium in Jerusalem for appearances in their respective finals early this morning.

Elizabeth Ndudi of Dundrum South Dublin AC signed off a superb championships, finishing in 7th place in the women’s long jump final having already finished 14th overall in the 100 meters competition earlier this week.

Ndudi’s third attempt of 6.10m would prove her best in today’s long jump competition, just 0.14m off a medal position. The gold medal was won by Hallberg of Sweden with a best of 6.39CR.

Andrew Glennon (Mullingar Harriers) and Sam O’Sullivan (Clonmel AC) had an early start in Jerusalem for a gruelling men’s 10,000m walk in the already hot conditions. The race started with a lightening pace and both athletes stayed in contention for the opening laps before the championship record-breaking pace stretched out the field.  Glennon would cross the finish in 14th place in a time of 50:56.67, while O’Sullivan was unfortunately forced to pull up in the first half of the race with what looked to be injury related. The race was won by Weigel of Germany in a Championship Record time of 44:01.60.

Glennon’s clubmate, Aisling Lane (Mullingar Harriers), went in the women’s 5,000m walk final shortly after. The Mullingar Harriers athlete did very well to maintain a consistent pace throughout in the increasingly hot conditions, crossing the finish in 26th place in a time of 27:53:69.

Ireland will have one more athlete competing in this evening’s session, with Fintan Dewhirst of Tir Chonaill set to go in the 400mH Final at 4.30PM Irish time. Start list HERE.
