Irish and international stars set for 70th Cork City Sports

POSTED:

Irish and international stars are set for action at the 70th Cork City Sports which takes place tomorrow evening (Tuesday July 9th) at the newly reopened Munster Technological University track in Bishopstown.

Early Irish interest will revolve around Bandon woman Nicola Tuthill (UCD AC) in the Women's Hammer Throw. Tuthill has been in record-breaking form this year becoming just the second Irish woman to ever throw over 70 metres for the event at the end of May. The 20-year-old will face stiff competition from two-time World Championship medallist Janee Kassanavoid (USA) and 2022 world champion Brooke Anderson (USA).

At 7:45pm all eyes will be on Sarah Lavin (Emerald AC) as she looks to continue her excellent recent form in the Athletics Ireland sponsored Women's 100m Hurdles. At last month's 123.ie National Senior Championships Lavin won gold in the hurdles and silver in the 100m. She will be joined in the field by four other athletes who have broken the 13 second barrier including Talie Bonds (USA) and Ebony Morrison (Liberia).

The Women's 3000m features Sophie O'Sullivan (Ballymore Cobh AC), while home favourite Darragh McElhinney (Bantry AC) goes in the Men's 3000m alongside Nick Griggs (Candour Track Club).

Recent national champions Mark Smyth (Raheny Shamrock AC) and Phil Healy (Bandon AC) are entered in the Men's and Women's 200m respectively, with the women's race also expected to feature Sophie Becker (Raheny Shamrock AC).

The final event of the evening is the Men's Mile and it will feature three time national senior 1500m champion Cathal Doyle (Clonliffe Harriers AC).

An exciting evening of athletics awaits on the banks of the River Lee.
