JUVENILES READY FOR ATHLETICS BONANZA

The next generation of athletics stars take to the track in Tullamore this weekend for the second of three action packed days of competition at the 123.ie National Juvenile Track and Field Championships.

Day 2 of the championships gets underway from 10am on Sunday July 21st, with the final day taking place back at the Tullamore Harriers venue on July 27th.

Day 2 Preview (July 21st)

The first medals of the day will be decided on the track when action gets up and walking from 10am. Aoife Tuthill (Bandon AC) takes to Girls U19 3000m Walk and is sure to be buoyed by recent news of sister Nicola’s selection for the upcoming Olympic Games in Paris.

Sean Doggett (Athenry AC) looks the star attraction in the 400m. Doggett was part of the hugely successful Irish team who competed in Rome last month and is sure to be a red hot favourite for the Boys U19 title should he make the final of the 400m.

There should be several compelling endurance races across Sunday’s track action, with Darragh Mulrooney (Moy Valley AC) 3000m and Maebh Caffrey (St Cocas) sure to go well in their respective U19 events.

This year’s fastest juvenile athletes will take to the track from 2.00pm for the 80/100m heats, with qualified athletes advancing to the evening’s finals.

Fatima Amusa (Leevale AC) will be tough to beat in the Girls U19 100m, while the U19 Boys division looking an open affair.

A host of age grade action will also be taking place in the field events across the day.

Andrew Cooper (Gowran AC) in the Boys U19 Hammer, and Caoimhe Gallen (Lifford Strabane) in the U18 Shot Put and Discus are but two to keep a close eye on throughout the day.

123.ie National Juvenile B Championships & Inter Club Relays (July 20th)

Proceeding Sunday’s action will be a bumper day of Juvenile B Championship action with a healthy sprinkling of Inter Club Relays.

Those in attendance will be treated to a relay bonanza across the busy six-hour schedule. Given recent successes in the event at international level, spectators are encouraged to arrive early for the U17 and U19 Mixed Relays which lead off the day’s proceedings from 10am.
