Day 1 Preview (July 8th)

The hurdles, 800m, steeplechase, and field events dominate day 1 of this year’s championships with a host of exciting athletes set to battle it out for national honours.

The U19 girls 800m race should be a compelling watch with Renee Crotty (Annalee AC) sure to set a blistering pace from the gun in what is her customary running style.

Neil Culhane (ACE AC) will be looking to back up last week’s junior title in the U19 boy’s race, while rising star Saoirse Fitzgerald (Lucan Harriers), who clocked a 2:09.42 back in May, will be hard to pass in the U17 race.

The ever-consistent pair of Emily Bolton (Donore Harriers) and Freya Bateman (Belgooly AC) should be to the fore in the U16 and U15 races respectively, while the now much anticipated dual between Renton twins, Holly and Freya, is sure to attract much attention on the day.

The hurdles are sure to provide much excitement across Saturday’s schedule, no more so than the clash of Sean Carmody (Leevale AC) and Fintan Dewhirst in the 110mH race, while Carmody’s clubmate Okwu Backari (Leevale AC) looks a leading fancy for the girl’s U18 title.

Kotryna Pacerinskaite (Fanahan Mc Sweeney AC) will be favourite for the U19 girls Hammer and Shot Put titles, while Liam Shaw (Athenry AC) returns for a tilt at the boy’s shot put title following last weekend’s podium finish at the same venue.

Ava Rochford (Nenagh Olympic) is another who will be back in action following her appearance at last weekend’s Junior Championships where she claimed gold with an impressive 1.76m clearance in the high jump. Expect Rochford to be last athlete jumping as she goes in search of Sorcha Murphy’s CR of 1.73m this weekend.

123.ie National Juvenile B Championships & Inter Club Relays (July 9th)

Sunday will provide another bumper day of athletics action with over 1500 athletes set to battle it out across the Juvenile B and Inter Club Relays Championships.

Those in attendance will be treated to a relay bonanza across the busy six-hour schedule with the first events getting underway from 10am.
