JUVENILES TO HEADLINE BUMPER WEEKEND

The next generation of athletics stars take to the track in Tullamore this weekend for the final two days of competition at the 123.ie National Juvenile Track and Field Championships.

Day 2 gets underway from 10am on Saturday July 22nd, with a second helping being served up at the same time on Sunday (23rd).

Day 2 July 22nd

The first medals of the day will be decided on the track when action gets up and walking from 10am. The Mullingar duo of Aisling Lane (3,000mW) and Matthew Glennon (5,000mW) are sure to go well once more in the U19 category.

The heats of the 400m follow on from the walks and should deliver their usual fill of drama and excitement. Sean Doggett (U18 B Athenry A.C.) and Manion brothers, David and Stephen (U19 South Galway AC), are just a few of the exciting young athletes on show.

This year’s fastest juvenile athletes will take to the track from 1.45pm for the 80/100m heats, with qualified athletes advancing to the evening’s sprint finals which are set for a 5pm start.

There will be bundles of quality competition in the field events, particularity in the U19 javelin competition where Oisin Joyce (Lake District Athletics) is one not to be missed.

Day 3 July 23rd

The 200s start the track action on the final day of this year’s juvenile championships. Colin O’Dwyer (Leevale A.C.) and Hannah Murray (Finn Valley A.C.) should go well once more following superb indoor seasons in the U19 category.

The girls U18 200m final should be a compelling watch with Hannah Falvey (Belgooly A.C.) and Fatima Amusa (Leevale A.C.) among the contenders.

Jack O’Connor (St. Michael’s A.C.) stormed to victory in the U16 Boys final back at indoors earlier this year in new championship record and looks the one to beat in the boys U16 race.

The senior races in the 1500m look ultra-competitive and the boy’s U19 race could be a cracker should Harry Colbert (U19 Waterford A.C.), Neil Culhane (U19 Ace A.C.), and Louie Woodger (U19 Metro/St. Brigids A.C.) all make the start line. Avril Millerick (U19 G Youghal A.C.) looked in great form in Morton last weekend and should be well in contention in the U19 race.

Joshua Fitzgerald (U19 B Leevale A.C.) looks the standout entry in the pole vault competition, while Evan Hallinan (Craughwell A.C.) will look to secure gold once more in the U19 long jump competition.
