KELLY AND GREENE WIN NATIONAL 5K TITLES

POSTED:

Kieran Kelly (Raheny Shamrock AC) and Amy Greene (Finn Valley AC) struck senior gold at this morning’s National 5k Championships held in conjunction with the Biofreeze Irish Runner 5k in the Phoenix Park, Dublin.

Over 1700 participants took part in the race, which was the first of three in the Biofreeze Athletics Ireland Race Series.

Kelly, who has won several national medals on the track down through the years, showed his undisputable class to win the senior men’s title, finishing just four seconds clear of the silver medal winner Colm Rooney (Clonliffe Harriers AC).

Kelly’s winning time was 14:30, with Rooney crossing the line in 14:34.

Just behind them was Galway athlete William Fitzgerald (Craughwell AC) who finished in 14:39.

Five other men also broke the fifteen minute barrier in a quality loaden race which featured some of Ireland’s best domestic road racing talent.

In the hotly contested battle for senior men’s team honours Clonliffe Harriers retained the title they had won last year, with their first four scorers: Rooney, Ian Guiden, Stephen Cashin and Mahad Mohamed Egaal, all inside the top fifteen. Letterkenny AC finished a strong second, while Galway City Harriers won bronze.

Meanwhile, Amy Greene, who is still a junior athlete, took the senior women’s gold in impressive fashion.

The 19-year-old DCU student who represented Ireland at the European Cross Country Championships in Brussels in December of last year continued her strong recent form winning in a time of 16:43.

Hot on her heels was Hannah Steeds (Leevale AC) who won silver in 16:48, while steeplechase specialist Roisin O’Reilly (UCD AC) battled hard to win bronze, crossing the line in 16:54.

Wexford club DMP AC took senior women’s team honours with sisters Ciara and Katie Wilson, along with Clare Barrett, the three scoring members. Dunboyne AC claimed silver, with Clonliffe Harriers also making their way onto the podium, winning bronze.
