MARK ENGLISH ADVANCES TO 800M SEMIFINALS
Olympian Mark English (Finn Valley AC) has secured an automatic qualification into the World Championship men’s 800m semi-finals after his third-place finish in the heats in the early hours of this morning (21st July 2022). The Donegal native came out strong from the start, keeping to the forefront of the pack throughout. English clocked a time of 1:44.76, a season best for him and just 5 hundredths of a second away from his National 800m Record, which qualified him for the Tokyo Olympic Games last summer. The 800m semi-finals get underway on Day 7 of the World Championships, (3:00am Friday 22nd July Irish time).
19-year-old Rhasidat Adeleke has come fourth in her women’s 400m semi-finals at the World Championships, which sees her finish in nineth place in the World. The Tallaght AC sprinting superstar ran her second fastest 400m of the season clocking a time of 50.81, just 0.11 behind her national record of 50.70, in the fastest of the three 400m semi-finals. It was the third track appearance for Adeleke at these championships, which her debut at the senior world championships, after competing with the mixed 4x400m heat and the individual 400m heat. Adeleke is part of the panel for the women’s 4x100m taking place on Day 8 of these championships, with the starting team to be announced later this week.
Olympian Chris O’Donnell (North Sligo AC) finished his World Championship competition after coming seventh in the men’s 400m semi-final with a time of 46.01. O’Donnell has had stellar championships, playing a crucial role in the mixed 4x400m heats and final, as well as producing superb individual race performances in the mens 400m. O’Donnell has been in strong form throughout his 2022 season, now turning his attention towards the European Championships next month.
Day 7:
Olympian Louise Shanahan (Leevale AC) takes to the women’s 800m heats on Day 7 of the World Championships. The Leevale AC athlete set the national record in May this year to 1:59.42 just weeks before winning her second national senior championship title. Shanahan will feature in Heat 6 at 1:50am on Friday, with the challenge to be one of the first 3 to cross the line or secure one of the 6 fastest times to qualify for the semi-finals on Day 8 of the Championships.
