MURRAY SECURES PLACE IN EUROPEAN FINAL

POSTED:

It was a superb opening session for Irish athletes on day 2 of the European U18 Championships in Israel this morning, with Niamh Murray of Bray Runners highlighting Irish involvement in securing her place in Wednesday’s 400m final with the run of her life in the semi-final.

Murray, who ran from lane 1 with no athlete outside her in lane 2, showed experience beyond her years to cross the finish line in a 54.88PB to secure one of the fastest qualifier places.

Murray will now return for her 3rd appearance of the week when she takes to the 400m final which is set for 5.05pm (Irish time) on Wednesday July 6th.

Murray wasn’t the only Irish athlete in PB form this morning, with Fintan Dewhirst (Tir Chonaill AC) also running a PB in his 400mH heat. Dewhirst crossed in a time of 52.58PB which ranked as the second fastest time overall. The Tir Chonaill athlete will be joined in the 400mH semi-finals tomorrow by teammate Sean Carmody (Leevale AC) who also secured qualification as one of the faster qualifiers (54.85q).

Both athletes will be back in semi final action tomorrow at 7.55am and 8.02am respectively.

Victoria Amiadamen (Dooneen AC) was first of the Irish in action on day 2, and the Dooneen athlete also secured her place in tomorrow’s 400mH semi-finals. Amiadamen clocked a 1:01.46q and will return to the track at 8.17am tomorrow morning.

Liam Shaw (Athenry AC) rounded out the Irish involvement in this morning’s session. Shaw posted a best throw of 15.50m in the Shot Put which wasn’t enough to advance on this occasion but the Athenry star will undoubtably benefit hugely from the international competition experience.

Ireland will have another 4 athletes taking to competition during this afternoon’s session including Jack Fenlon and Harry Colbert who go in the 3,000m final at 6.15pm.
