NATIONAL LEAGUE SET FOR FINAL FLOURISH

POSTED:

The AAI National Outdoor League Final takes place this Sunday (August 13th) at Tullamore Harriers Stadium, where all eyes will on whether any clubs can stop last year’s defending champions.

Sunday’s action is set for a 10.30am start with a host of star names returning to national competition across the busy schedule.

League Final Men

Clonliffe Harriers will be looking to continue their domination of the premier competition having claimed 12 league titles since 2008. Clonliffe’s success year saw them take no fewer than nine wins across the course of the final and another strong showing is expected this weekend.

The Dubliner’s look set to call upon the class of Olympian Marcus Lawler in the sprint events, while recent national 400m bronze medallist Brian Gregan as well as multi eventer Rolus Olusa will be targeting maximum points in their respective events.

Leevale were the last club to beat Clonliffe in the league and they will look to youth again this weekend with an exciting team heading to Tullamore set to include Conor Morey (100m), Colin Doyle (200m), Reece Ademola (HJ & LJ), and James Ezeonu (Hurdles).

Tir Chonaill AC enjoyed a superb league season in 2022 and can’t be ruled out of contention, while Nenagh Olympic, Ratoath, KCH, and Waterford AC are sure to collect wins throughout the day.

The D1 title could be a little harder to call this year, even with Raheny having the luxury of calling upon Irish 200m record holder (indoor) Mark Smyth (100m&200m) in their pursuit of this year’s title.

Raheny are sure to face several challengers on the day, including an exciting looking team from Ennis Track which includes last month’s senior bronze medallist Gabriel Kehinde (100m), as well as Niall Murphy (1500m), Rory Chesser (3,000mSC) and Dylan Casey (5,000m).

This year’s national 5 mile champion Emmet Jennings (5,000m) will look to lead out a DSD team who are sure to be buoyed heading into this weekend following the success of their clubmate Elizabeth Ndudi earlier this week.

Crusaders AC will be right there heading into the final events while Templemore AC, Lusk AC, and Lagan Valley AC will be hoping to put in another bold showing.

League Final Women

Dundrum South Dublin claimed last year’s premier title in impressive fashion and look set to call on many of the stars from that success back into action on Sunday.

Mollie O'Reilly (100m) will look to spearhead the title defence on the back of her outstanding outdoor season, while Molly Hourihan (200m), Maria McCambridge (3000m), and Molly Mullally (LJ&TJ) will also look to play leading roles. Kate Doherty (100mH) returns to national competition and is one not to be missed in the 100m hurdles.

DSD could face their greatest challenge from Clonliffe Harriers and Raheny who have experienced squads entered. Newly crowned national champion Jessica Tappin looks to have a busy day ahead with the Clonliffe athlete set to go in the 100mH, 400mH, and shot put.

Raheny will look to Orla Comerford (100m) and Niamh Kearney (2000mSC) to make significant points contributions to their day’s total, while Leevale will look to make inroads in the field events.

The women’s D1 title should provide another thrilling conclusion with Enniscorthy looking to defend last year’s title, an achievement that was made all the more impressive in that it was their first year having a team entered. They will look to Blanaid Fogarty to lead the challenge in the 100m and 400m.

Tír Chonaill AC have a team with plenty of depth taking to Sunday’s competition and Lexi Campbell could play a leading role for them in both the long jump and relays.

Local athlete Laura Mooney looks one of the leading hopes for hosts Tullamore Harriers and is sure not to be found wanting for support when she takes to the track for the 3000m.
