NICHOLAS GRIGGS BREAKS IRISH 1500M JUNIOR RECORD

POSTED:

Nicholas Griggs (Mid Ulster AC) has broken the Irish 1500m Junior record with a scintillating display at the Sport Ireland National Indoor Arena this evening (Feb 16th).

Griggs clocked a breath-taking 3:43:71 to break the record set by fellow European U20 gold medallist, Cian McPhillips (3:44:85 set in January 2020().

Something special looked to be on the cards from the off, with Griggs deciding to ignore the race pacer and chase the clock. The Tyrone teenager powered through his final lap to clock the brilliant sub 3:44 which is just shy of Cian McPhilip’s outdoor U20 record of 3:40.56 set in summer of 2021 in Carlow.

Only last weekend, 17-year-old Nick Griggs (Mid Ulster AC) became the first Irish U20 athlete to break 8 minutes for 3,000m.
