Rome 2024: Day 4 Evening Session

POSTED:

ADELEKE PRODUCES RACE OF HER LIFE TO CLAIM EUROPEAN SILVER

Ireland's Rhasidat Adeleke has secured her first senior individual medal with a superb silver-medal-winning run at the European Championships in Rome this evening (June 10th). The Tallaght AC athlete crossed the finish in a new national record time of 49.07 behind Poland’s Natalia Kaczmarek who took the gold in 48.98.

Adeleke ran a superb race, rounding the final bend right in contention for gold alongside Kaczmarek before the leading duo settled down for a head-to-head dual over the final 100 meters.

Ultimately, Kaczmarek would nudge ahead in the final strides with Lieke Klaver of the Netherlands rounding off the podium places (50.08) in third. Adeleke’s relay teammate Sharlene Mawdsley finished eighth (51.59) in her first championship final as an individual.

It completed a remarkable 400m competition for the Irish at these championships, with all three athletes securing top-ten placings, Adeleke (2), Mawdsley (8), and Becker (10).

All three athletes, who played such pivotal roles in the success of the mixed relay team on Friday, are also part of the women’s 4x400m relay team who are set to take to the track tomorrow morning**.

The top-tens continued to come Ireland’s way in the women’s hammer competition with 20-year-old Nicola Tuthill claiming ninth place in her FIRST European Final with a best throw of 69.09. It marked another huge milestone in the career of the Cork athlete who has very quickly become a leading ambassador for Irish throws.

Results Summary:

  • Nicola Tuthill – Women’s Hammer Throw – Final – 9th with best of 69.09m
  • Rhasidat Adeleke – Women’s 400m – Final – 2nd in 49.07 NR*
  • Sharlene Mawdsley – Women’s 400m – Final – 8th in 51.59

RELAY TEAMS ROME READY (TUESDAY JUNE 11TH):

The relay teams will headline the morning session for Team Ireland on the fifth day of these championships.

The men’s 4x400m team will lead the charge in the opening round at 9.45am, swiftly followed by the women’s 4x400m heats at 10.15am.

The men’s 4x100m team face a somewhat tougher task to advance at 11am but can call upon the services of Ireland’s fastest man Israel Olatunde.

The evening session will see Anika Thompson and Laura Mooney look to bank valuable senior championships experience with the pair taking to the women’s 10,000m final from 8.30pm.

Thompson broke Mooney’s U23 10,000m national record in California at the end of March and the US based pair are sure to have sights set on breaking into the top 20 as they chase down personal best performances.
